What is an Accountable Care Organization (ACO)?

An ACO is "a provider-based organization that takes responsibility for meeting the healthcare needs of a defined population with the goal of simultaneously improving health, improving patient experience and reducing per capita costs."

In March, 2010, the Patient Protecton and Affordable Care Act was passed, which directed CMS to implement the ACO option for Traditional Medicare (A & B) no later than January 1, 2012.

Saint Francis Hospital and Saint Francis HealthCare Partners have been collaborating on the development of a plan to address the healthcare payment reform required with the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

  • An ACO Steering Committee co-chaired by Chris Dadlez and Jess Kupec has been created.
  • Six sub-committees have been established - Data & Reporting; Delivery of Care Network; Finance; Governance/Clinical Integration; Primary Care; and Quality.

It is critically important that our physician members take an active role in the development of the Saint Francis ACO.

I urge you to get involved.  Please contact me if you are interested in participating or if you have any questions.
